Techniques

Introduction

In the exercises of this chapter the students practise physical self defense techniques.

The Techniques

The techniques used in the following exercises are mainly simple shock techniques. They make the attacker for a short while immobile or distract them, so that the attacked person can leave. We use kicks, kneeing, stamping with the feet, punches, elbowing and the palm strike. Not shown in the exercises but employed in the courses are useful techniques like biting, scratching, pinching and pulling someone´s hair.

This chapter will not provide a description of the single techniques. If you are already teaching, you will certainly know the described techniques or similar ones. Please put then into the "structure of the exercise" the techniques you are usually teaching. If you are starting with self defense and still looking for effective techniques, best lern them in a self defense or martial arts training. There you have the chance of practising the movements and of getting a feedback by the trainer and your training partners.

Material

In most of the exercises of this chapter body shields are used. It is a good experience for the students to do punches and kicks powerfully on a solid target. Yet it is also possible to do the exercises without shields. In the exercise "Say Stop and Kick" for example the kick may be done beside the body of the attacker. Or the defender kicks before the attacker comes into reach. The same applies to the techniques in "Setting the Techniques" and "Parcours".

Here you see the techniques that are used
in the exercises:

Kick in the groin

Kick to the knee/ shin
followed by a technique
to get free of the wrist grip
Kneeing
in the groin
Kicking upwards out of
a lying position
Kicking the knee/ shin
out of a lying position
Punch on the nose or in the stomach; if the attacker is tall, also in the groin
Elbowing in the
stomach

Defence against being clutched from behind:
  • Kicking with the heel against the shin
    of the attacker
  • Stamping with the heel on the foot
